Yesterday I know that the world is in great panic about the said earthquake that will occur in the Philippines and could made to kill 70,000 of people. And it have the magnitude of 7.5. So therefore is has that ability to kill and even to destroy and city or either a country rather. Even me, when I was in school I am so really thinking about that said earthquake and praying and hoping that the earthquake is not true. And after our exam because yesterday is our exam day, after our exam I really leave the school too early. I asked the permission of my boss to let me to go home early, and then he let me out. When i arrive din our home I really tell my grand mo and even my mother about that earthquake for them to be ready if that said earthquake is true.

Fire guts houses

Five houses and an elementary school in Sta. Ana district, Manila were gutted by fire before dawn Friday.

The fire started around 3 a.m. from a house near the Emilio Aguinaldo Elementary School in Sta. Ana's Punta neighborhood.

After gutting three floors of a school building, flames spread to nearby houses. The fire was pacified around 4 a.m.

Arson investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire and the property damage.

7 crew dead, 26 others missing

Seven crewmembers drowned and 26 others went missing when a cargo vessel sank off the waters of Carles town in Iloilo province on Saturday.

Reports said the coal-laden M/V Lake Paoay was sailing in the waters of Carles town when strong waves battered it at the height of typhoon Frank's (international codename Fengshen) onslaught over the weekend.

The cargo vessel came from Semirara town in Antique province and was bound for Toledo, Cebu when tragedy struck.

Four crewmembers were swept to the shores of Burias Island in Masbate province. The four were rescued by the villagers.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has launched a search mission for the 26 missing crewmen.

The vessel sank as other rescue teams of the PCG and the military searched for missing passengers and crewmembers of the Sulpicio Lines' M/V Princess of the Stars.

‘Frank’ kills

At least 59 people have been killed in the central Philippine province of Iloilo and the death toll could rise further after flash flooding from Typhoon Frank (international codename Fengshen) washed out communities, the local governor said on Sunday.

"Iloilo is like an ocean. This is the worst disaster we have had in our history," Neil Tupaz told local radio.

At least 80 people have been reported killed since the storm hit on Friday. Hundreds of people on board a passenger ferry remain unaccounted for after the vessel capsized in Romblon.

Four people have been confirmed dead and one crewmember were rescued when the MV Princess of the Stars turned upside down.

President Arroyo, who is in the United States for a state visit, presided over the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) meeting Sunday through phone.

During the meeting, an irked Mrs. Arroyo was heard over radio dzMM scolding the Philippine Coast Guard for allowing the Sulpicio Lines-owned ship to set sail despite the bad weather.

Jollibee Foods Corp. (JFC), the country's largest fast food operator, is acquiring a majority stake in a restaurant chain in Taiwan through its wholly-owned unit Jollibee Worldwide Pte. Ltd.

In a statement, the company said Jollibee Worldwide signed a joint venture agreement with owners of the Lao Dong restaurant business that is based in Taipei.

Under the terms, JFC will buy 70 percent of Lao Dong for P61.1 million. It will also invest P30.6 million in the joint venture while the present owners will invest another P13.1 million. The deal is expected to be completed within this year.

"The joint venture shall operate and expand the Lao Dong restaurant chains in Taiwan and in the People's Republic of China," JFC said.

"Further, the head and one of the present owners of the Lao Dong business, Mr. Liu Cheng Hsiung, shall assist the Jollibee group in developing food products and processing and preparation techniques for its business units in China, the Philipiines and other countries."

Oil sludge spills into Davao City coastal waters

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is now cleaning up the waters off the coast of Sasa Wharf, Davao City where more than 1,500 liters of oil sludge were spilt Saturday.

Commander Roy Echeverria, station chief of PCG Davao, said the spill may have been caused by the overflowing of water from plants located nearby. He said the area has been under heavy rain since Thursday night.

"It’s coco oil sludges....galing sa septic tank umapaw dahil sa baha. The spill can really affect the Davao Gulf and its immediate environment...but there's nothing to worry about. Naagapan naman agad ng Coast Guard," he said.

Residents living near the shore are complaining of the foul odor emitted by the spill.

The PCG, however, assured residents that they have nothing to worry about since the agency has already prevented the sludge from spreading.

The PCG is now probing where the sludge actually came from. It added that they will go after the company where the spill came from.

4.7-magnitude quake rocks

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake was felt in Northern Mindanao Monday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The Phivolcs branch in Surigao City recorded the earthquake at 2:56 p.m. The quake's epicenter was located 19 kilometers north, five degrees west of Butuan City.

The epicenter was five kilometers deep, Phivolcs added.

The quake was felt in Butuan City at intensity 4; intensity 3 to 2 in parts of Cagayan de Oro City; and intensity 1 in Camiguin.

An intensity 2 aftershock was also felt in Butuan City.

No damage caused by the quake has been reported.

CHENGDU, China - Chinese rescue workers continued to search for their own in the mountains of Sichuan province on Monday, after a military helicopter ferrying earthquake survivors crashed in heavy fog over the weekend.

The military transport helicopter with 19 people on board, including residents injured in the quake, crashed on Saturday near Yingxiu, close to the quake's epicenter, Xinhua news agency said.

The five-member crew of the helicopter was on their 64th mission since a devastating earthquake hit Sichuan nearly three weeks ago, Xinhua said.

China has mobilized its military to unblock roads, clear rubble and deliver food, water and tents to the estimated 5 million people displaced by the May 12 earthquake. Rescuers are racing to clear lakes and set up housing before the summer rainy season begins.

Metro Manila floods

Only a few thousand hectares of Metro Manila land, which is equivalent to the area of one town, is expected to suffer from flooding during this rainy season, Chairman Bayani Fernando of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said Monday.

Fernando said the MMDA expects only 2,000 hectares of Metro Manila to experience intermittent flooding during the rainy season, down from the 13,000 hectares that is usually flooded in the past.

Fernando said the MMDA worked all throughout the dry months to rid the floodgates in Metro Manila of garbage, boulders and other debris. Blocked canals and waterways have also been cleared, he added.

He said the agency has also finished fixing five flood pumps in the Camanava (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela) area.

Nature Reserve

WOLONG, China - Six rare giant pandas were evacuated Friday from the famed Wolong breeding center in southwest China due to food shortages and damage caused by last week's earthquake, staff said.

The endangered animals were trucked to another nature reserve in quake-hit Sichuan province, following eight others that were removed on Thursday in a departure planned before the earthquake, staff members told an AFP journalist.

"They left today. They are already gone," said one of several staffers at the now largely-deserted site to look after the roughly 46 pandas left there.

Three other pandas remained missing following the quake, staff said.

Three injured in Cotobato bus terminal explosion

Three people were injured after a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) went off at the Weena Bus terminal in Cotabato City Monday evening.

The bomb was placed near the gate of the bus terminal at Jose Lim Street in Cotabato City at around 7 p.m. Monday.

Security guard Leopoldo Cabanyog, a tricycle driver identified only as "Ismael", and Weena bus driver Nestor Bayog were injured by the explosion. Most of them suffered feet injuries.

Initial reports said an aircon bus arriving from Davao City was entering the terminal when the explosive went off.

The Army's 6th Explosive Ordnace Disposal unit Commanding Officer Capt. Ramon Torres said initial findings point to an IED consisting of bomb chemical, TNT, placed inside a container, with a cellular phone used as triggering device.

Based on recovered pieces of evidence, investigators said these materials were similar to the bomb used at the April 26 Weena Bus bombing in Midsayap, North Cotabato.

Fishermen

The crew of the MV Maria Beatriz of Montenegro Lines rescued brothers Cesar 34, and Cipriano Espinosa Jr. 29, in the waters of Guimaras at 7 a.m. Friday after being cast off from their boat due to bad weather.

Cesar told ABS-CBN Bacolod huge waves destroyed their pumpboat while they were fishing.

They were stranded at sea for more than 19 hours without food and water.

They left their house in Barangay Balangigay in Pontevedra, Negros Occidental at 6 a.m. Thursday.

Cesar said they decided to go to sea because the weather seemed fine.

After catching more or less 10 kilos of fish, they decided to return home but were stopped by big waves.

Around 7 a.m. Friday, the MV Maria Beatriz was passing along Navalas Point in Guimaras when its crew saw the stranded fishermen waving.

Oil hits record

LONDON - Oil prices hit a record high above 126 dollars on Friday, driven into uncharted territory by speculative interest amid concerns about tight global energy supplies, analysts said.

New York's main oil futures contract, light sweet crude for June delivery, spiked as high as 126.20 dollars per barrel in London trading hours.

London's Brent crude contract hit an all-time high of 125.90 dollars.

Sucden analyst Michael Davies said there was "keen interest in the oil market by the (investment) funds, which are currently being attracted by oil's rapid price appreciation this year.

"This probably explains the move higher over the last few days," he added.

Mango

Sarangani Province - Mango farmers in the province plan to increase their production this year as China allows eight companies in the country to export mango starting this month.

"This is a new opportunity for mango farmers here to produce quality fruits for export," said Benjamin Figueroa, president of Mango Growers Association in Sarangani Province.

The association of mango growers here is currently surveying mango plantations in the province to assess the potentials for the target production this year.

In 2007, they only harvested around 250 tons of mango fruits in 3,500 hectares of mango plantations which are mostly located in Malungon town. The target production is set at four tons per hectare this year.

"We are optimistic to meet the demand now because financiers are coming in the province," added Figueroa.

Flash floods

Flash floods brought by a sudden downpour on Friday isolated a village in Malita, Davao del Sur.

On Friday afternoon, heavy rains poured down Sitio Malionaw, Barangay Macol in Malita, causing Macol River to overflow.

The floods destroyed farmlands of corn and coconut in the village, and according to Macol barangay chairman Josie James Rillo several livestock were also killed by the floods.

Tagaytay

With an altitude of 2,250 feet above sea level, Tagaytay City enjoys a cool climate all year round.

This city perched on a ridge is located in the province of Cavite, some 56 kilometers south of Manila. It overlooks Manila Bay on the north, Taal Lake and Taal Volcano on the south, Laguna Bay on the east and the China Sea on the west.
